Dave Manning
Dave is an officer with thirty years experience in the Australian Customs Service at Sydney International Airport and took up oil painting as another hobby in mid January, 2009.
He is basically self taught but closely observes other artists' techniques and absorbs their comments and criticisms of his own paintings.
Dave is endeavouring to develop his own unique and recognisable style and has no doubt that will happen over time with constant painting and experimentation with technique and tools. He uses his painting as a form of meditation where he loses himself in the process of creating something from nothing and enjoyment in the satisfaction it gives himself and others.
In his first art competition, the Campbelltown City Show in April of 2009, Dave won Highly Commended, 2nd, 1st AND Champion Best Oil Painting winning a total of $27.00! The monster had now been created. He exhibited at the Camden Art Prize in May 2009 where his three entries attracted a good deal of interest. Then there was the Sutherland Shire Art Society's 36th Annual Open Art Exhibition 2009 where two of his works were purchased. Now the monster had grown horns….
Dave is entered in the 2009 Publisher’s Cup, Cricket Art Prize (with a prize of $20,000) and enjoys the thrill of entering as many competitions as he’s able.
Dave describes his style as “impressionist with a twist” and basically paints what he sees, often from scenes in his imagination. What the “twist…” is, is anyone’s guess….. but he is prolific in turning out paintings at times up to three pieces a week with a portfolio as at September 12th 2009 of around 50 works.
Having sold some paintings via his web site (www.pier72.com previously his R/C model submarine site) and competitions, coupled with the enjoyment of mixing with like minded folk as yourselves Dave hopes to stretch his painting abilities and continue to create something beautiful from nothing.
Dave lives near Campbelltown with his lovely wife, Trish and their two spoilt dogs, Angel & Billy.
