Paint - A - thon 2009
The workshop went extremely well. The venue was large enough for the four tutors, pastels having been cancelled because of insufficient students. The lighting was just sufficient and would have been much better if it had not been so overcast with heavy rain and storms. There was some sun on the Monday. For me personally, Saturday was the best painting day I have had in my life. This was because Paul McCarthy, as well as being a great teacher, puts his students at ease with his great humour. Also, I had my young niece there painting alongside me. She is a bubbly girl who became the target of a lot of Paul's humour. She took it as it was meant and people in the hall were wondering what all the laughter was, coming from our corner of the room.
Comments from people in Joe Bezzina's class, Malcolm Carver's and Richey Sealy's were all positive, basically saying that they were great teachers and they were enjoying the work. For myself, I feel I've "turned a corner" on my artistic journey and am very grateful.

Workshop 9th September - Port Hacking Community Centre
The workshop tutors were the very excellent Pamela Griffith (Oils and Acrylics) and Marion Stroud (Watercolour). Here are some photos and comments on the workshop:
Pamela took a different appproach to tutoring. We each worked on our own individual (and different) painting. Pamela then individually demonstrated on our work what she wanted to show us to lift the painting to a new level. She also worked in front of the whole class. In addition to demonstrating, she generously gave a lot of informative tips from her experience of years of painting. These tips to me were invaluable. I took lots of notes so I can revisit them from time to time to help me remember. She said the aim of the day was not to take home a pretty painting but to leave with new knowledge to enable us to paint better in the future. I feel we will do that!

Those who participated in Marion's workshop must have gone home feeling that the day had been very worthwhile. The weather was fine and sunny, the venue was bright and spacious, parking was easy and the morning and afternoon teas were tasty - though calorific!
Marion Stroud is an obvious expert in her field, but equally important from our point of view, she turned out to be an effective teacher too. In a relaxed atmosphere, Marion's demonstrations of painting flower subjects were clear and well organised, as were her useful tips on composition, colour mixing and simplification of the subject. We all received encouraging comment and advice regarding our individual efforts as Marion continuously roamed around the group.
The session was over all too soon. However, I felt that we learned a lot about watercolour painting and are aware of our strengths and weaknesses,. Now, all we have to do is practice regularly to reach our own potential with the medium.
